Rongai Route Kilimanjaro Trek – 9 Days Adventure (7 Days Climbing)

Overview
First, the Rongai Route Kilimanjaro Trek is the only route that approaches the mountain from the northern side. Moreover, this 9-day itinerary offers a gentle and gradual ascent, which is excellent for acclimatization. Additionally, the route passes through remote wilderness areas and alpine deserts before joining the final summit push. In fact, because of its drier conditions, it is ideal for climbers who prefer fewer crowds. Consequently, you will enjoy impressive views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Therefore, it is a highly rewarding Kilimanjaro experience. Finally, you will celebrate your achievement at the summit of Uhuru Peak.
Itinerary Day By Day
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi/Arusha
Arrive at Moshi or Arusha, where your driver will transfer you to your hotel. Take the day to rest, acclimatize, and prepare for the climb. Your guides will meet you to discuss the route, check your gear, and provide an orientation for the adventure ahead.
Day 2: Rongai Gate to First Camp
After breakfast, you drive to Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border to complete park registration. The trek begins through farmland and light forest, offering a quiet and less crowded start to the climb. The gradual ascent makes this day comfortable as you hike toward First Camp for overnight.
Day 3: First Camp to Second Camp
Today’s trek continues through open moorland with expansive views of the northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail steadily climbs, allowing your body to adjust naturally to the altitude. You will reach Second Camp in the afternoon, where you can rest and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Day 4: Second Camp to Third Camp
The landscape becomes more rugged as you hike higher into the alpine zone. Vegetation thins out, and wide mountain views dominate the scenery. The steady pace helps with acclimatization as you make your way to Third Camp for dinner and overnight rest.
Day 5: Third Camp to Kibo Hut
Today you traverse the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, entering the alpine desert environment. The terrain is dry and barren, offering dramatic mountain scenery. You arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon, rest, eat an early dinner, and prepare for the summit attempt.
Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Descent to High Camp
Your summit ascent begins shortly after midnight. Hiking slowly under the stars, you climb toward Gilman’s Point before continuing to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement and taking photos, you descend carefully to High Camp for overnight rest.
Day 7: High Camp to Mweka Camp
After breakfast, you continue descending through the alpine and moorland zones. As you lose altitude, vegetation gradually returns and breathing becomes easier. You arrive at Mweka Camp in the afternoon, where you enjoy your final night on the mountain.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Return to Moshi/Arusha
This morning, you descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. After signing out of the park, you receive your summit certificates. You are then transferred back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved rest and celebration.
Day 9: Departure from Moshi / Arusha
After breakfast, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight home, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
